How to Format Computer
Reformatting your Windows XP computer will erase everything on your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. After you have reformatted your computer, you will need to reinstall all of your personal data, as well as any software products you may use (for example, Microsoft Office, iTunes, Symantec AntiVirus, etc.).

Reformatting your Windows XP computer has three main parts:
  • Reformatting the computer from your operating system CD.
  • Reinstalling the drivers that came with your computer.
  • Running Windows Update to reinstall all security updates and patches.

NOTE How to Format Computer : If you have a network connection, please unplug from the network before starting installation.

1. First, make sure that your computer is set to Boot to CD. This is a different procedure depending on your computer. When your computer first boots look for an option to enter the BIOS settings. Under the BIOS settings find the "Boot Order" and make sure the CD-ROM is set to boot first.

2. With the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, save your BIOS settings and exit.

3. If you've done everything correctly you should be asked to "Press Any Key to Boot from CD".

4. After installing the necessary setup files, Windows XP will display your partitions. Delete any existing partitions by selecting the desired partition with the arrow keys, press D to delete and then L to confirm the deletion.

5. You should now have only one option, "Unpartitioned Space". Press Enter to install Windows XP to the unpartitioned space.

6. When asked how you would like to format the partition, select "Format using the NTFS file system".

7. After the partition is formatted, Windows XP will begin installation. The computer will reboot. While the computer is rebooting, please do not touch any keys. From now on the screens will look like the following:

8. Enter your product key. If you purchased Windows XP from the IMU Bookstore, the product key will be located on the back of the sleeve your CD came in. If you are reformatting using a Windows XP CD that came with your computer, the product key may be located on a sticker somewhere on your computer case.

9. When asked for Network Settings, choose "Typical Settings".

10. Windows XP will now complete installation.

11. Next turn on the Internet Connection Firewall.

12. Reconnect your computer to the Network.

13. Run Windows Update by opening Internet Explorer, then clicking on Tools -> Windows Update. Follow the on-screen instructions for installing critical updates.

14. Restart your computer.

Defrag Multiple Hard Drives At Once In Windows XP

As you would know its a painful process to defragment all hard drives at the same time in Windows XP, as the Disk Defragment utility in Windows XP doesn’t have any option to defrag all the drives at once.

But a simple batch file trick can get over this problem and defragment all of the drives, one after the other.

The disk defrag utility in Windows XP can be called from the command line with the following syntax:

Usage:

defrag [-a] [-f] [-v] [-?]

volume drive letter or mount point (d: or d:volmountpoint)

-a Analyze only

-f Force defragmentation even if free space is low

To make Windows defrag all the drive at once we need to create file named defrag.bat [you can have any name, even yours :) ] . Now for each hard drive, assign a line to the batch file. For instance, if we want to defragment drives C: , D: , F: and G: we will add these three lines:

defrag c: -f
defrag d: -f
defrag f: -f
defrag g: -f

Now to defrag at once, just either double-click on the batch file or start it from the command line.

Steps to Disable File and Printer Sharing in Windows

Laptop Repair

A laptop is a simple and compact computer. Yet, its compactness is the reason for its intricacies and complications. For instance, while most normal PCs have a mother board that has different ports for different other components of the computer to be attached, a laptop on the other hand, has a mother board that has a lot of things that are built into it, instead of sections where other parts can be attached. An example here can be given of a sound card, which often comes as a separate part for older PCs and has to be attached to the motherboard of a computer. However, the sound and video display card is integrated with the mother board in case of the laptop.

It is for these reasons that the motherboard is perhaps the most important part of a laptop after the processor. It is also not easy to repair a laptop motherboard because of its immense intricacies. While repairing a motherboard one has to be extremely careful and cautious.

Whenever a problem is arises with a motherboard, one should not take the risk of repairing it themselves since if it is not done properly it can lead to irreparable damage to the entire laptop. It is usually safe to approach a dealer of a laptop for the repair of its motherboard. They have technicians who have an expertise in dealing with laptop motherboard problems and can make the right diagnosis and carry out repairs.

There are many self employed people who repair laptops and are often a much cheaper option. One can approach them to repair their motherboard, but a few things should be kept in mind. The most important is to know their experience in repairing laptop motherboards. Let them not convince and fool you by saying that they have repaired many PC motherboards since laptops and PCs are a different thing all together.

Before you begin, download a few of our Diagnostic Software Tools to pinpoint possible problem areas in your PC. Ideally, troubleshooting is best accomplished with duplicate parts from a used computer enabling "test" swapping of peripheral devices/cards/chips/cables. In general, it is best to troubleshoot on systems that have been leaned-out. Remove unnecessary peripherals (soundcard, modem, harddisk, etc.) to check the unworking device in as much isolation as possible. Also, when swapping devices, don't forget the power supply. Power incompetency (watts and volts) can cause intermittent problems at all levels, but especially with UARTS and HD's.

Inspect the motherboard for loose components. A loose or missing CPU, BIOS chip, Crystal Oscillator, or Chipset chip will cause the motherboard not to function. Also check for loose or missing jumper caps, missing or loose memory chips (cache and SIMM's or DIMM's). To possibly save you hours of frustration i'll mention this here, check the BIOS Setup settings. 60% of the time this is the cause of many system failures. A quick fix is to restore the BIOS Defaults. Next, eliminate the possibility of interference by a bad or improperly set up I/O card by removing all cards except the video adapter. The system should at least power up and wait for a drive time-out. Insert the cards back into the system one at a time until the problem happens again. When the system does nothing, the problem will be with the last expansion card that was put in.

B.)RESETTING CMOS.

Did you recently 'flash' your computers BIOS, and needed to change a jumper to do so? Perhaps you left the jumper in the 'flash' position which could cause the CMOS to be erased.

C.)NO POWER.

Switching power supplies (the most common used PC's), cannot be adequately field-tested with V/OHM meters. Remember: for most switching power supplies to work, a FLOPPY and at least 1 meg of memory must be present on the motherboard. If the necessary components are present on the motherboard and there is no power:
1) check the power cable to the wall and that the wall socket is working. (You'd be surprised!)
2) swap power supply with one that is known to work.
3) if the system still doesn't work, check for fuses on the motherboard. If there are none, you must replace the motherboard.


D.)PERIPHERAL WON'T WORK.

Peripherals are any devices that are connected to the motherboard, including I/O boards, RS232/UART devices (including mice and modems), floppies and fixed-disks, video cards, etc. On modern boards, many peripherals are integrated into the motherboard, meaning, if one peripheral fails, effectually the motherboard has to be replaced.* On older boards, peripherals were added via daughter boards.

*some MB CMOS's allow for disabling on-board devices, which may be an option for not replacing the motherboard -- though, in practicality, some peripheral boards can cost as much, if not more, than the motherboard. Also, failure of on-board devices may signal a cascading failure to other components.
1. New peripheral?
a) Check the MB BIOS documentation/setup to ensure that the BIOS supports the device and that the MB is correctly configured for the device.
(Note>> when in doubt, reset CMOS to DEFAULT VALUES. These are ) (optimized for the most generalized settings that avoid some of) (the conflicts that result from improper 'tweaking'. )
b) Check cable attachments & orientation (don't just look, reattach!)
c) If that doesn't work, double-check jumper/PnP (including software and/or MB BIOS set) settings on the device.
d) If that doesn't work, try another peripheral of same brand & model that is known to work.
e) If the swap peripheral works, the original peripheral is most likely the problem. (You can verify this by testing the non-working peripheral on a test MB of the same make & bios.)
f) If the swap periphal doesn't on the MB, verify the functionality of the first peripheral on a test machine. If the first peripheral works on another machine AND IF the set-up of the motherboard BIOS is verified AND IF all potentially conflicting peripherals have been removed OR verified to not be in conflict, the motherboard is suspect. (However, see #D below.)
g) At this point, recheck MB or BIOS documentation to see if there are known bugs with the peripheral AND to verify any MB or peripheral jumper settings that are necessary for the particular peripheral to work. Also, try a different peripheral of the same kind but a different make to see if it works. If it does not, swap the motherboard. (However, see #D below.)


2. Peripheral that worked before?
a) If the hood has been opened (or even if it has not), check the orientation and/or seating of the cables. Cables sometimes 'shake' loose or are accidentally pulled out by end-users, who then misalign or do not reattach them.
b) If that doesn't work, try the peripheral in another machine of the same make & bios that is known to work. If the peripheral still doesn't work, the peripheral is most likely the problem. (This can be verified by swapping-in a working peripheral of the same make and model AND that is configured the same as the one that is not working. If it works, then the first peripheral is the problem.)
c) If the peripheral works on another machine, double-check other peripherals and/or potential conflicts on the MB, including the power supply. If none can be found, suspect the MB.
d) At this point, recheck MB or BIOS documentation to see if there are known bugs with the peripheral AND to verify any jumper settings that might be necessary for the particular peripheral. Also, try another peripheral of the same kind but a different make to see if it works. If not, swap the motherboard!


E.)OTHER INDICATIONS OF A PROBLEM MOTHERBOARD.

1. CLOCK that won't keep correct time. >>Be sure to check/change the battery.

2. CMOS that won't hold configuration information. >>Again, check/change the battery.

Note about batteries and CMOS: in theory, CMOS should retain configuration information even if the system battery is removed or dies. In practice, some systems rely on the battery to hold this information. On these systems, a machine that is not powered-up for a week or two may report improper BIOS configuration. To check this kind of system, change the battery, power-up and run the system for several hours. If the CMOS is working, the information should be retained with the system off for more than 24 hours.


F.)BAD MOTHERBOARD OR OBSOLETE BIOS?

1. If the motherboard cannot configure to a particular peripheral, don't automatically assume a bad motherboard, even if the peripheral checks out on another machine -- especially if the other machine has a different BIOS revision. Check with the board manufacturer to see if a BIOS upgrade is available. Many BIOS upgrades can be made right on the MB with a FLASH RAM program provided by the board maker. Video Failure Troubleshooting

When we talk about troubleshooting video failures, we're usually talking about no image at all on the screen. The easy cases to diagnose are those where the monitor or LCD isn't powering up properly, or the PC not powering up. Video card failure isn't uncommon, and video cards can lose their contact with the motherboard, especially early AGP adapters which frequently popped out of their slot. Video failure can also be due to motherboard failure or to external interference, when it comes to poor image quality.

Power Supply Failure

PC's are actually much easier to repair these days than in the early 90's when I wrote the my old guide for technicians I was training. The number of discrete parts in a PC has dropped radically since I first cracked open an PC AT in 1985. The average PC these days has less than a dozen parts, unless you start counting cables, and that total includes the keyboard and mouse! So, some new techs figure the way to learn computer repair and troubleshooting is to carry around a few spare parts and swap-til-you-drop. Well, it doesn't really work that way for a number of reasons, including the fact that all the really tough problems are intermittent, so diagnosing the problem correctly is actually the main challenge. Computer hardware problems are less common than software problems (just think about all the malware and viri running about the Internet), and there are far fewer variables to consider when learning to troubleshoot PC hardware. The real trick is to go about it in a systematic matter, eliminating possibilities whenever possible before you start purchasing replacement parts. To that end, I developed a series of diagnostic flowcharts for logical approach to computer repair. Four miniature flowcharts are below, the full size versions are accessed by clicking on the images or the links. All of the flowcharts are excerpted from the published book "Computer Repair with Diagnostic Flowcharts" which is also used as a technicians field manual and a course text in technical colleges.

Power Supply Failure



The first place to start is always confirming that the power supply is operating properly. When you start troubleshooting a dead computer, never ignore the possibility that the AC power to the PC's power supply is at fault. Power supplies often fail gradually, giving rise to symptoms that appear to be caused by individual component failure. Many cheaper PC's ship with power supplies I would basically describe as "disposable." If I had to choose one part to blame the majority of intermittent failures in cheap PC's on, it would be the power supply.

It is often happened the computer was run properly when we bought it , but soon after several of operation the computer has been totally stacked .This is a possibility we will face when we face a second hand computer .

That is the reason we say that it is so hard to predict that our new second hand computer will long live under our hand. The center of the problem is that the second hand mother board some time use several low quality spare parts. So the damage possibility of the second hand tools is so high compared to the qualified one. On the other hand there is another possibility that the second hand computer live time is depended on the user or owner. There are several factors influenced the damages :

1.The power is activated but there is no "On" sign.
2.The power is activated but and power supply is the only can be run
3.The power is activated but there is no beeps sound
4.The power is activated but there is a flash signal

Solution:

First try to clean dust from the interior cashing especially in motherboard part You can cleand the dust by air spraying or soft brush or hair dryer but the treatment must not be followed by heating or you can clean them by alcohol tape head cleaner. Finally try to dry them properly

If the problem is still existed as the result of the cleaning process, or the computer is still unable to make beep sound!.now try to clear your motherboard’s CMOS . If the computer soon produces beep sound as soon as after you took the clean processing, it means there is a running possibility

Of your computer . Some thing you must do is you have to uncover how many beeps sound can be produces by the computer , and try to compare with your computer guidance book.. and you can find the problem of beeps sound signal. In every new motherboard always be provided by jumper for CMOS clearing. If you are successfully can return your old computer by replacing or reversing the battery for 180 degrees do it and let it cool as about 30 seconds.

If all the treatment above does not turn give any solution to your computer problem you can change your Power supply. But if you don’t have any reserve power supply you would better to try the following ways before you decide to buy a new Power supply.
Before you try to remove your motherboard , or if you don’t know the proper position to install the following connector as : speaker , power, reset, HDD – led and everything in your motherboard, it is better you remember the position at first.

For connector installing you can see the tip of the connector , usually we can find three angle symbol., three angle mark is match to (+) symbol in motherboard connector.In several particularly motherboard commonly the written connector face outward of the motherboard.

Put your mother board on the table , then remove the processor and memory also, then turn it on. But you have to ensure that Power Suply and speaker chasing have been installed properly in order to recognize the “on” sign resulted by the beep sound appeared by the motherboard.

Wether the motherboard resulted beeps slund?
If it is so, that is the good signal , because it means that the “on” signal we you are trying to find is appeared. Compare to the mother board guidance book, then you will find the proble. You have to do some actions in order to avoid beeps sound.and the computer can be run as usual.

IF all of the treatment above still find the bottle neck , there is a possibility that your motherboard is damage.

By studying the last case mentioned above as simultaneously blinking power led , and it is not followed by the other "on" signal ,seemly the system is in standby mode. You can try by weak the mother board up by pushing power supply button as long as 45 seconds.

When the treatments above are failed to return your computer, there is a possibility your computer is in damage condition or totally unfuctioned. Usually the cylinder component near the connector is damage.
